Yoga Therapy for the Ageing Population Training - Modules 1 & 2

Yoga Therapy for Seniors will provide qualified yoga teachers, yoga therapists and other health care professionals with the knowledge and understanding to provide safe and appropriate yoga instruction and yoga therapy for an ageing population including geriatric and palliative care clients.
 
This course is open to yoga teachers, therapists and other professionals and healthcare practitioners working with seniors. While a 200 hour YTT is recommended, this course would still be beneficial to those in complementary professions to incorporate yoga therapy tools into your practice.

 

This training is part of the 500-hour Level 2 Yoga Therapist Certification

7:00-8:30 AM Therapeutic Yoga Class
8:30-9:15 AM Breakfast
9:15 AM-12:30 PM Morning Session
12:30-1:45 PM Lunch
1:45-6:30 PM Afternoon Session

Curriculum

Learning Outcomes:


Module 1: Understanding and knowledge of common health concerns and appropriate practices for working with Seniors in a group yoga class setting or individual yoga therapy session. Ability to plan and implement a chair yoga class or private session for a client with appropriate modifications according to their individual needs.

 

 

Module 1 (2-Day Training)

 

  • evidence base for yoga therapy with seniors

  • chronic diseases associated with ageing population and sedentary lifestyle including:

  • osteopenia & osteoporosis, sarcopenia, arthritis, fall prevention, anxiety & depression, sleep problems, cognitive functioning, caregiver fatigue, breathing problems, and more

  • recommended yoga practices with modifications and contraindications for prevalent health

  • conditions in Ageing population (asana, pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, laughter yoga)

  • how to plan and guide a chair yoga practice

  • spirituality (Acceptance, gratitude and compassion)

  • translating research into practice (special considerations for working with this demographic and

  • barriers/challenges to implementing yoga therapy programs for seniors)

 

 

Module 2: Yoga for Geriatric and Palliative Care Populations

 

  • psychological issues of ageing

  • caregiver stress

  • yoga philosophy applied to ageing, end of life

  • examination of research on Yoga Therapy and Yoga for Geriatric and Palliative Care Patients

  • health concerns & conditions:

    • Alzheimer’s

    • Dementia

    • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

    • Cardiac Rehab

    • Anxiety

    • Depression

    • Cardiovascular Disease

    • Chronic lower respiratory disease

About Melissa Pearson aka Melissa Scheichl 

 

B.A. Psychology, B. Ed., M. Ed., RYT, Member IAYT 

 

Melissa Pearson has her Masters Degree in Education and over 17 years of experience in the field of education. Her personal experiences with yoga for healing and therapy led her to pursue a 200 hour yoga teacher training with her Anusara-Inspired Yoga Teachers. The focus on optimal alignment and heart-felt practices resonated with her passion for anatomy and proper physical alignment and the therapeutic benefits of yoga for emotional healing. Melissa has a background in psychology and psychotherapy and has continued her studies to integrate psychotherapy with yoga therapy to help support clients with various physiological, biochemical and psychological health issues and concerns. More >>

There is a kitchen on-site for residential students who opt to prepare their own meals. There are grocery stores and restaurants within 5 minutes drive.
